New Gear

Got a new hat!

Turned out to be a little spendy @ about $35 including shipping from Canada, but I figured what the hell, they only had 200 made, and will probably never be any more. Well built hat too, verry solid construction.  Little short top to bottom compared to what I’m used to, but its pretty comfy, probably get used to it. First I’ve had without the top button, really like that idea! (Anyone thats ever driven an old leaf sprung truck on a rough gravel road will fully understand this!!)

Its from a YouTube channel/ project I’ve been following for a few months now, a rebuild/restoration of a vintage 1970s Cessna 172B.

BTW, They have a cool cooking channel too, if planes aren’t your thing… B-)

This is kinda a departure for me.. I don’t really wear ball caps much, hard to find ones I find comfortable,  (since the narrow brim style came about approx 20 years ago…and won’t bloody leave!) I’ve only ever had one I truly like, and I’ll have been wearing  it literally 20 years this summer.

And, nor do I really do brand or channel stuff… But its been a cool project to follow,  and I certainly don’t mind supporting that, it was just too cool to pass up.

A Saturday evening wallet.

A couple hours project from last weekend.

What I’ve been using a few years(not that I’ve carried it much for a bit over a year, using metal card cases instead);

It’s one of those free ones you get with a hunting license. Thin, waterproof, and durable, its worked fine. I would put cards in it, fold cash over it and clip it from the end.

I actually have been carrying this again, for a few weeks, simply because I hadn’t for so long.

Used the plastic one as a pattern and did this in some thin pebble grain leather I got a few years ago(2014 on the mailing envelope… good gracious time flies!!). Calf skin as I recall… Got it for watch straps that I never got made.

That blue thread is my favorite braided 20# ice fishing line. Great to sew with, strong, blends in on most things, but a nice(I think) contrast on others.

Don’t use cash much anymore with Covid, but I fold a few bills inside this one, its just a touch too thick to have them on the outside. Makes cash access a little slower, but as I say I don’t really use it now anyway.

So far its working out verry nicely!

A hot item from 1935

If you light it, that is!

Another new lighter that I’ve had a few weeks now. Been wanting one of these for a while, the 1935 replica Zippo.

Finish on it is like a polished brushed chrome… it has the brushed pattern on it, but it is super smooth and shiny in some light. A real Pain to photograph.

You can easily see the difference, they are much less rounded, boxier than the newer style. Also slightly shorter. (The current modern style dates from the mid 1940s, with a couple other variations between it and the 1935.)

1935 on the right, modern in the middle, and for interest, a 1952 steel cased model on the left.

They have their own insert to fit the squared corners, but a standard modern insert, even a pipe insert does fit. Might be a bit more fuel evaporation since its not snug in the case corners though.

1935 on the right.

And the modern insert in the 35 case;

Here is the 35 insert, where it’s corners are too big to go into the modern case;

Unfortunately with the case being not as tall in the lid, the new butane and electric arc insert won’t work. They go into the bottom case, but the lid won’t clear them to close.

Close but no ceegar!

Not really a big deal, if you’re into the retro style, then odds are your after a oil lighter style flame anyway, not the modern ones. I’d just thought it would be groovy to have an arc insert in sometimes– but I have an odd mix of tastes! 😉

Evercraft 150 lum pen light.

One more new light. This was purchased on a whim, it popped up in the checkout area of napa’s website. For $4.99, I figured why not?

Branded Evercraft. Its one mode, 120 lumens. Runs on 3xaaa, which it came with. Given the cost of alkaline batts these days, I think I paid about $1.50 for the light! Lol.

Its all plastic, verry lightweight.

One long bar led?

I expected the butt end of it to be magnetic like I’ve seen on these bar lights before, so I’m a little disappointed. But it does have a magnet on the clip, and the clip rotates/swings on the light for aiming it, which is kinda nice. Will see how it works in use.

With Jetbeam BC10 for scale.

It is freaking bright! I’ve no doubt its 150 lum, or at least 100.

Might actually grab a couple more of these things to throw in glove boxes or tool boxes for cheap backup/ emergency work lights. Looks like they’re $10.99 normally, they’re $6 off this month. Even @ $11, I think I’d get at least one, can’t see anything wrong with it.

Fenix E03R(new micro pocket flashlight! )

New toy!

I picked this as a donor to cut up for a new mod/custom project(details on that soon!), trying not to have to build a light/driver from scratch.

But after I ordered it I realized that its cased in solid aluminum! And would be a real bitch to take apart without hurting the innards.

On top of which, I really started to like the idea of keeping it as is.

Its just arrived, and I must say I won’t be able cannibalize it for parts, I Really do like it!

When they say small, they mean it! I bought it mainly on its external dimensions so I knew where I could fit the parts, but even then I was surprised how small it is!

Absolutely amazes me that on high this thing is only 40 lumens shy of the BC10 on high!

Full specs, details of operation etc, coming soon when I do a review after I can get in a few days of carry and use.

Field Notes Covered!

Been trying to post this for a week or two. For a while now I’ve wanted to make a leather cover for the Field Notes I carry. Like, a year… or more.

But every now and then I stop carrying thrm for a while. Like this sum

mer I stopped because it was one less item that I would be touching in stores, out and about, that I couldn’t really disinfect in any way. I went to using my phone for to do lists and time cards at work(covid free zone cause no one else is there.. well, mostly), and memorizing shopping lists.
At work its been ok, except where I need to take fast notes, measurements, and layout diagrams.
And it never worked for lists.
So I’ve gone back to carrying the notebooks. And to wanting a cover to help keep them from disintegrating.
I had a cover before, got in late 2011 but it was made for a thicker Moleskine book, which I used it with for a couple years off and on. But to not be too floppy when I transitioned to field notes in 2014, it had to have at least 2, 3 better, in it. Too thick to carry easilly. Which I did do for a while.
But it became too cumbersome, and I went to naked single notebooks. And then found that the naked notebooks get torn up a lot.
After a while I went to wrapping all new Field Notes in a layer of heavy duty packing tape, to keep them more colorfast, and less fragile. But even then they can still get pretty beat up before I get through one. Especially if there is a lot of carry and little use, like this summer.
So anyway. I don’t have time to make anything. Or really to think about making anything. The old rule rings true, you can have time to do things OR money to do things. Not both.
I love the job I have, ain’t complaining. Just missing having time for other things… 😉
So anyway, I broke down and started shopping/browsing. And after A LOT of narrowing it down, I bought a couple things that normally I’d prefer to make.
I wanted simple thin leather, 3 to 4oz flexible but abrasive resistant… And real leather.
And the front and back pockets that slip over the cover on the book. Thats really hard to narrow down, so many makers do the Midori/travelers style with the elastic bands in the spine, no hold for the covers. I want to open the leather, and the notebook as one, not have to open each separate.
And Just those pockets. No credit card slot, no pen holder, no hold shut strap. And hug the notebook like second skin, not a arctic parka 3 sizes too big.
And not $100 freaking bucks…
So.. I found what I liked, then what I REALLY liked, and at a bit more than I wanted to spend (figured about $25 was good for paying a craftsman, where they profit but I don’t get gouged) I figured what the hell and did it. Was About $35.
Super glad I did!!
So it turned out to be thicker leather than I wanted. And it doesn’t hug the edges of the book as close as I’d have liked.
Its actually bigger in footprint in both thickness and area, as the old cover I had. The old cover I stopped trying to use because it was too big in pocket, and uncomfortable.
This amazingly disappears, I can’t feel it at all!!
Yeah, anyway, shut up and show pics AK, I know…
Old and new

Inside (came with a single graph craft notebook, a pleasant surprise)

And the outside showing why I splurged and got this. Some of you will remember a slight obsession I have with compass rose designs… Just couldn’t pass this up! Its laser engraved, and surprisingly deeply.

Here is a link to the nakers shop, if anyone is interested.

https://www.etsy.com/shop/LostSkeletonsBrandCo

The only disadvantage to using this is any of the Field Notes quarterly eddition I get, I don’t get to see the fancy covers. And since I just got several packs of special editions, I’m feeling this loss. But just because I have the cover doesn’t mean I ALWAYS have to use it.
So I think I can find a happy medium where I will still get to see the more special notebooks.

Well, hello babe!

New Zippo again.

Have wanted a pin-up styled lighter, just because, for a while now. I got one once before, in an off brand Zippo coppy, but the way the image was done with a thick plastic buble/cover over it just wasn’t my thing.

I’ve looked at all of them Zippo makes/has made, took forever to find 3 or 4 that are semi tasteful, and the woman isn’t ugly as a mud fence… And wasn’t so far out of production that I’ll never find one… This is one of them, a Playboy cover edition, March 1988.

I’ll probably end up having a one off made with an image of my choice to get what I want.. we’ll see.

Plus one nib, 2.0!

My other new pen came in finally!

Took almost 1 month even to get here, but it made it!

This one is really, really, really expensive… $4.50. And it took $2.50 for shipping. lol.

It’s a Jinhao 996. Just couldn’t pass up a tiger print pen! Its really solid, nice and hefty, if not all metal its close to it. Feels like an F nib, smooth writer so far. Came with a piston converter in it too! I have a sample of Monteverde Cherry Danish in it to start.

Would Not feed from filling the converter separately, even after forcing ink all the way up through the feed… Un filled and filled with converter in the pen, through the nib/feed, and then its perfect, no issues at all.

I hate filling that way, tends to get too wet on the feed and you always end up dipping the grip section and getting messy. Hopefully now that its primed itll flow/fill the other way from now on.

My only slight complaint is that the cap doesn’t post very securely on the back of the pen. I have to press it on then twist s little for it to grip. Even then its not really secure, and takes verry little to come off. You cant shake it off, but any grip of the cap and it comes off.

It’ll be fine, it stays well enough for writting, but you can’t fidget with the pen much between sentences.

But anyway…

And with the Prefounte.
